Perfect location for exploring the lakes

KW, Staffordshire, stayed: March 2024

A great location for exploring the south lakes.
The staff were very welcoming when checking in, the package we had included a welcome drink so we sat in the bar which looks out onto the lake.

We selected a super deluxe room with a lake view but were disappointed as it didn t look the super deluxe room on the website. It was like the standard room with a large window/view of the lake. The views of the lake were wonderful, however the room was dated.

The bed frame and headboard was not in the best condition due to some of the faux leather peeling off. However, the bed was very comfortable. A mini fridge would be a huge bonus, although the end of March, we had a couple of warm sunny days so the room was very warm and we had nowhere to put water or milk to keep cold. The staff were great and brought us fresh milk when requested for tea/coffee in the room.

The spa area is nice, 20m swimming pool was enough to get my morning swim in. The steam room wasn t working during our 2 night stay but the sauna and ice experience was.

A great stay could just do with the bedroom furniture updating and the photos on this website and Macdonald updating to reflect the room that you re actually getting.

Wonderful stay

Anon, stayed: March 2024

Enjoyed our overnight stay here. The super delux room was beautiful, very clean and well appointed with a great sofa and chairs along with tv and desk in a separate area of the bedroom. The bathroom was a good size and also very clean and looked quite new.
Vouchers for all the extras included on our booking details were provided at check in time. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and had breakfast in the morning and the service and food were great. Lovely to have a window table at breakfast which was a beautiful sunny day with gorgeous views of the lake. We will definitely return to the Old England and would recommend booking through Country Hotel Breaks

A beautiful hotel just in the right place

IS, Yorkshire, stayed: March 2024

The hotel is really lovely. The restaurant evening meal was as good as you could get anywhere along with a lovely breakfast 1st class and highly recommended.

Our room which was of very good proportions overlooked the lake, idyllic!

Only 2 downsides which spoilt it for us, very very poor and patchy internet, we mentioned it 3 times but no solution.

Also, and disappointingly, only luke warm water available in the shower and sink, again mentioned it to reception 3 times but no solution ( the young lady on reception was surprised about the lack of hot water but a quick glance at the hotels reviews reveals it s peppered with negative comments and complaints about the cold water and it been going on for some time now.

Hmm

Anon, stayed: March 2024

The deluxe Double was a good size and the view of the lake was stunning, however the radiators were on, we had a oil filled radiator and had toask for another as it was very cold that day.
The bathroom was old like the building the shower watwr wasnt hot even though there was a warning it was. And not many toiletries which the word deluxe evoked and we hadnt packed any ti bring with us.
We told the receptionist that i was a vegetarian and tge meal included involved mainly cauliflower and i dont eat it she neglected to inform us there there was a vegetarian/vegan menu available which i was given at dinner. My partner chose the plant based burger which crumbled in her hands and the chips were so salty they were ineditble, my tempurer veg salad and chickpea sweet pot curry was nice.
I tried the spa the heated pool was bitter cold, sauna was unfortunately broken so not enjoyable.
All i all not the experience we had hoped for

February stay

ZT, Cumbria, stayed: February 2024

Me and my boyfriend could not fault our stay. From arriving to having our car parked and stored for the weekend to the room with a view onto the lake was lovely and the room layout with all that was included we had no issues with. The breakfast that was included both mornings was average but what you would expect. The food included on evening 1 was a 3 course and was beautiful a meal I would highly recommend. We unfortunately didn t get time to even see the spa let alone try it out so i can t comment but would happily stay again and hopefully get the chance of this next time.

The Terrible 0ld England Bowness.

Robert, Derbyshire, stayed: February 2024

Where you got your descrition of the hotel from god only knows. This is a run down poorly managed
hotel living on past glories Just one example. We reqested bathrobes and slippers. We were told
none were available as there were problems with the laundry supplier.Every time we left our room
we were met by an icy blast from an open window that could not be closed because the window frame
was rotten.Good prep for the pool, it was FREEZING, another ploy to save money? The only saving
grace to some extent was the restaurant, the food was brill but for some strange reason the staff walked out in the middle of our meal for 15 mins, during our second night
To summarise,we arrived at the Old England with great hopes, having just spent two great nights
at the Novotel in Edinburgh. The Old England by comparison is a one star b&b.

We arrived on the day the Snow Came!

Gwen Robertson, Preston, stayed: December 2023

I arrived with my daughter for an overnight Spa break on the day the snow fell. Took us 4 hours to get from Windermere to the hotel in Bowness!! We rang ahead and a young man came up from the hotel, opened the car park for us and then carried our bags back to reception. What a star! Once at the hotel, the customer service continued to be excellent for the duration of the stay. The hotel, the rooms, the location and the SPA were all first class and highly recommended. We were mightily impressed by the fact that a coach party had been stranded in Bowness that day, and the staff obviously moved heaven and earth to feed and accommodate them. Well done all of you. It needed to be very special to be worth the journey, and it was!
