Lovely old property, disappointing food.

Julian, Lancashire, stayed: September 2022

We had a dinner/bed breakfast deal which meant eating in the main restaurant as opposed to the bistro.Canapes were served before, but there was little choice on the main menu and what we received was very disappointing. The steak was tough and gristle, despite it being the most expensive dish, my partner had the wild mushroom roly poly which was stodgy and tasteless.
The room was spacious and comfortable and the spa lovely, as we had good weather that day.

Nice overnight relaxation

TE, North Yorkshire, stayed: August 2021

Arrived early afternoon due to spa booking. Reception was efficient and spa whilst small was relaxing although the steam room not working was disappointing.
Dinner in the Bistro was ok at best with a limited menu and the surroundings lacking a quality feel.
The accommodation was excellent with a nice sized room complete with jacuzzi bath. Breakfast was good in the actual restaurant and check out was quick and easy.

Disappointing

VD, West Yorkshire, stayed: January 2025

We chose a spa hotel as it was a relaxing night away to celebrate our anniversary. When we got there the reception did not mention the Spa so we looked in the room brochure which said to just go down. Unfortunately when we went to the Spa we were told that it was only available if specifically booked as part of the room rate. It was really disappointing. We also got a cream tea as part of our stay but when it arrived there was a full pot of tea and extra water but only two tiny scones between two people. The menu said a cream tea included two scones per cream tea. We felt cheated. Finally the breakfast was overcooked and inedible. Specifically the poached eggs had been cooked with vinegar and that's all I could taste. The Bacon, black pudding and mushrooms were all hard and dry.

The only criticism I have is that the menu in both restaurant and bistro are very limited everything else was fine.

Nice but be updated

Anon, stayed: February 2025

Nice break. We were in a room in the coach house which was a bit tired and could do with updating. General areas also felt a bit dated.

Dinner was at 730, shown into conservatory but didn t even get a menu until 750 and didn t sit down to eat until well after 8. The guy taking the orders seemed to be run off his feet but then loads of staff in restaurant. Food was delicious when it finally arrived.

Breakfast was a little disappointing as fruit was all tinned but cooked part was lovely.

Spa was nice but could do with some loungers for relaxing and cooling off

Mid-week Break

PC, West Yorkshire, stayed: March 2025

This was a retirement gift from work and we had a relaxing couple of days. A hotel with character and where the service and food were excellent. Gourmet Restaurant not really our thing but we enjoyed the Bistro which had lots of choice. Appleby itself was delightful. We had a wander around the town and found an excellent coffee shop, followed by a stroll alongside the river. Thoroughly enjoyable break.

Lovely stay

J johnston, stayed: February 2025

The hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly. We had a lovely room and a very comfy bed. I liked the size of the room and fact there were two comfy armchairs in our room. The bathroom was good and shower hot. In the evening we ate in the restaurant and from canap s in the conservatory to dessert the food was excellent. Breakfast the next day was good with a varied choice of cooked and cold foods. We will be back

Relaxing break in beautiful countryside

KG, North Yorkshire, stayed: January 2022

Staff could not have been more friendly and room was spacious and well appointed. Food was good in the evening though menu was limited and did not vary. Breakfast was disappointing. Menu states 'manx kipper', 'cumberland sausage', and ' bury black pudding' - all inaccurate and cheap nasty versions were used instead. A poor show for a four star - don't describe items and then substitute others tell it like it is! Rather unappetising.
