Perfect reception, staff pleased to help, room and facilities excellent, afternoon tea best ever, BUT we had booked dinner for 8.30. As it was 5 courses it needed to be eaten gently and with time between courses. We were badgered by staff walking out of the kitchen and starring and the restaurant manager approaching us twice in 5 minutes. We did not have pudding. Totally spoilt birthday treat.

Wonderfully presented hotel surrounded by tranquil gardens. Short staffed & lacking service.

Anon, stayed: June 2021

We both loved the outside space at this hotel, quiet and peaceful gardens overlooking Lake Windermere.

The location is set a little out of town for local pubs and restaurants but easily accessible by taxi, if needed.

The reception area and check-in was faultless and we stayed in a spacious, albeit very dark room.
The bar and restaurant were both disaster zones. The food menu (plastic laminated sheet) resembling something from an 80 s roadside caf .

Overcooked, bland food. Limited vegetarian options. No check-back. It all felt very rushed and clinical. We ordered some drinks (which failed to materialise) and decided to eat elsewhere the next evening.

Some staff members did their very best but many were generally quite rude, disinterested and distant. Admittedly, it felt like many diners were a nuissance rather than being treated as guests.
Needless to say, having declined to eat on our 2nd night and travel elsewhere, we were puzzled when a hefty (optional) service charge was applied to our bill on check-out.

Overall, the hotel sits in a great location but unfortunately is far from what I would refer to as a fine country break .

Thank you for your review, I was happy to hear our reception team looked after you upon check in, I must just address the comments you have made regarding our menus.
The menus were indeed laminated, this was to ensure that they could be wiped down between uses to give our guests full confidence regarding COVID-19, as recommended by UK Hospitality. We have since returned to our usual format of non-laminated menu's

Strange to find no obvious reception (the room itself is hidden by the front do and not well signed - it looked like a storage area.).
The bedroom room was somewhat disappointing in cleanliness with cobwebs on the inside of the windows and hair in the bath plug blocking it.

I was saddened to read your review, we pride ourselves on providing a service that we are not only proud of but also makes people want to return time and time again.
We have of course passed your comments to housekeeping regarding the room.
We do have a separate reception area that is quite informal, I am sorry if this was not to your liking.

Country House Hotel

Yorkshire lass, stayed: May 2019

Hotel is friendly and has a nice Ambience.
However the food in the Restaurant is not as good as it says it is, the same menu each night if you stay for more than one night. I had sea bass the fish was nicely cooked but the leeks and potatoes where not up to scratch. The staff in the restaurant are young and the service is slow. Watch out you be specific re breakfast order I asked for just grilled tomato and got just half yes half a tomato Had tea in the garden in the afternoon but the cups where still on the table outside when I came down for dinner. Just lacking something. The gardens could be more manicured grass needed cutting pleasant enough the setting is very coinvent for the Lake. Better for more mature people not geared up for children.

Weekend break - July 2021

JC, West Yorkshire, stayed: July 2021

Lovely hotel in a tranquil setting. Customer service was good overall; let down by one person on reception who was rather dismissive.

Food choice on the evening menu was limited especially for vegetarians. Worse on our second night when the choice was more limited (no specials menu) due to the hotel hosting a wedding. Breakfast was a disappointment too as requested soft boiled eggs were hard boiled.

Our booking also included a selection of home made chocolates which were not delivered. Hotel did provide a refund for this but were very reluctant to do so.

There are better places to stay in Bowness for the price.

A nice enough break

Anon, stayed: August 2022

We redeemed a high tea, overnight stay, 5 course dinner and breakfast voucher to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The staff who served high tea on our arrival were very warm and accomodating. Though they had reserved a table, when we asked to move to a different one this was great. I particularly found the catering staff who served this meal to be the warmest and they really saved the trip.
As he also served breakfast the next morning, I was sure to say a heartfelt thank you.

When our reservation was placed, we included all dietary requirements so it was annoying that at every meal time, we still neded to ask for or check that the appropriate dairy free foods were seved or on its way.

Also at dinner time, though there were only a few people eating. The staff seated everyone in the same corner of the room, this made conversations very restrictive! As the other couple were only seated a few inches away and could hear the neighbouring couples whole conversation and any had with the waiters.

The five course meal was very filling. Each dish was beautifully presented, a lot more filling than we expected and a delicious meal on its own. We had to make it to the desert though and each enjoyed these. A massive thank you to the chefs! By the end of it, we needed a walk around the building and a herbal tea!

The reception staff were also very helpful and friendly throughoutthe duration of our stay. Made us feel very welcome, answered any questions and even gave recommendations.

Ups and downs

PP, Derbyshire, stayed: October 2022

Lovely room and location. More menu variety needed. Menu needs to change daily. Poor choice for vegetarian. Poor service at dinner. Inexperienced staff and a few more smiles would have been appreciated by certain members of staff.

WS, West Midlands, stayed: May 2023

A Beautiful building in a wonderful location and excellent food and service. however, what should have been a classic comfortable country house hotel was marred by frenetic over elaborate decor. Plastic flowers and a great deal of clutter in the public rooms. The owners should take a look at the nearby Blackwell house to see how simplicity of decor can enhance a house of that era
