Overpriced and underwhelming

JB, stayed: March 2025

Stayed for two nights would not return. PROS Fabulous staff, great spa treatment, fabulous location dog friendly CONS Very average breakfast, I have never been anywhere that expects you to pay a supplement for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or eggs Benedict.. Breakfast on the second morning there was only one member of staff on duty due to staff sickness, the poor lady was at her wits end trying to serve 40 people. A manager should have stepped in to help if no one else was available. Quality was on a part with a Travelodge not what I would expect from a hotel that rates itself as 4 star. Bedrooms and public areas are very tired and dates. Bathrooms don t even give you any toiletries, a generic shower gel nailed to the wall and a small bar of soap doesn t scream luxury to me. Scuffed furniture marks on carpet, gaffer tape holding bits of carpet down in central areas the whole place needs a refurb. The restaurant is very dated as well. We had the other car menu on the second night which was absolutely delicious, but phenomenally expensive i.e. mains upward of 30 before sides. Sneakily they don t put any prices on the menu that is in reception so you re sitting duck. Only 4 cocktails on the bar menu and no training for the young staff to make anything new, I did however teach one how to make a negroni also the wine list is awful. I have stayed in a few of peak luxury hotels and this was the worst one, the location is incredible, but the hotel is average at best

Very nice hotel everything you need on the doorstep

Ian, Northamptonshire, stayed: March 2025

Not sure what it would be like in peak season could see it being very busy, just for where it is.

Weekend Break

MP, West Yorkshire, stayed: October 2024

Lovely location and very nice hotel with good quality food and restaurant service really nice; there was a slight problem being billed incorrectly although this was sorted after an additional, return telephone call.

Short break

Perfect location for a break in the Lake District. Comfortable rooms, relaxing spa and beautiful views over Lake Windermere. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking close by was a bonus.

Great getaway hotel

MT, Oxfordshire, stayed: April 2024

We loved our stay. Only one downside was very slow service each morning at breakfast. Perhaps more staff are required at this time.

Gateway to Lake Windermere

Anon, stayed: August 2024

The hotel was very welcoming and we had the most amazing view of the Lake from our bedroom window. I would say that the bathroom needed a bit of investment, the shower was nearly more than a dribble and the bathroom door kept sticking. We did ask for a fridge that never materialised and they were unable to get the TV to work. The food was excellent and the service in the restaurant and bar was excellent. Thank you

Perfect location for exploring the lakes

KW, Staffordshire, stayed: March 2024

A great location for exploring the south lakes.
The staff were very welcoming when checking in, the package we had included a welcome drink so we sat in the bar which looks out onto the lake.

We selected a super deluxe room with a lake view but were disappointed as it didn t look the super deluxe room on the website. It was like the standard room with a large window/view of the lake. The views of the lake were wonderful, however the room was dated.

The bed frame and headboard was not in the best condition due to some of the faux leather peeling off. However, the bed was very comfortable. A mini fridge would be a huge bonus, although the end of March, we had a couple of warm sunny days so the room was very warm and we had nowhere to put water or milk to keep cold. The staff were great and brought us fresh milk when requested for tea/coffee in the room.

The spa area is nice, 20m swimming pool was enough to get my morning swim in. The steam room wasn t working during our 2 night stay but the sauna and ice experience was.

A great stay could just do with the bedroom furniture updating and the photos on this website and Macdonald updating to reflect the room that you re actually getting.
