Disappointed
I stayed with you for 5 nights a week ago , I had previously around a month ago emailed your head office and told them my wife and myself were recently married and was there any chance of an upgrade? This was forwarded to the hotel but on my checking in at the hotel when I asked I was told no it wasn t possible. Then as I was getting my luggage together someone else checked in and was given an upgrade to a balcony room . To say I wasn t happy would be an understatement.
Regards
Kevin Newton
Overpriced and underwhelming
Stayed for two nights would not return. PROS Fabulous staff, great spa treatment, fabulous location dog friendly CONS Very average breakfast, I have never been anywhere that expects you to pay a supplement for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or eggs Benedict.. Breakfast on the second morning there was only one member of staff on duty due to staff sickness, the poor lady was at her wits end trying to serve 40 people. A manager should have stepped in to help if no one else was available. Quality was on a part with a Travelodge not what I would expect from a hotel that rates itself as 4 star. Bedrooms and public areas are very tired and dates. Bathrooms don t even give you any toiletries, a generic shower gel nailed to the wall and a small bar of soap doesn t scream luxury to me. Scuffed furniture marks on carpet, gaffer tape holding bits of carpet down in central areas the whole place needs a refurb. The restaurant is very dated as well. We had the other car menu on the second night which was absolutely delicious, but phenomenally expensive i.e. mains upward of 30 before sides. Sneakily they don t put any prices on the menu that is in reception so you re sitting duck. Only 4 cocktails on the bar menu and no training for the young staff to make anything new, I did however teach one how to make a negroni also the wine list is awful. I have stayed in a few of peak luxury hotels and this was the worst one, the location is incredible, but the hotel is average at best
Very disappointing
This was an expensive wedding gift for us for a one night spa stay and we were extremely disappointed. Our room had a lovely view of the lake but aside from that was dirty and run down, we had a balcony which was covered in rubbish, bird poo and spiders webs. I understand this is not completely down to the hotel but there was no effort to clean this at all. We arrived for check in on the Saturday afternoon so decided to have a walk around the area as it was our first visit to Windermere then head to the resturant for dinner. The food was not great at all, the menu sounded lovely and we were looking forward to it but was not up to even an average standard with no atmosphere at all. We had to ask for cutlery twice for our mains as we d used the first set with our starters while our food sat and went cold and the staff were just chatting in the corner. The service was very slow and we were constantly prompting staff. We had a late checkout of 12pm so decided we d use the spa in the morning, unfortunately the pool had an issue and they didn t know when it would be open. We kept checking back and it finally opened just before 12pm, this was a shame and meant we didn t get chance to use the facilities of our spa stay . If we would have known we d have visited on the Saturday afternoon, I understand this may have been out of the hotels control but was one of the main reasons we visited this hotel. Overall we were left very underwhelmed and let down by a stay which was supposed to be a relaxing post wedding night away.

Give it a miss
Paid 350 for a spa weekend (4pm sat through to 12.30om Sunday), hotel disappointing, dated and lacking basics like shampoo. Wifi did not work on our room due to poor signal, water pressure in shower very poor trickled out. Paint flecks on light fittings and staples showing in carpet joins
Curtain rail in bar area fell down whilst we were in there, whole hotel needs some TLC
Food was good in restaurant, service awful staff didn't communicate, waited long time to order drinks, no spoons with soup course, some food tepid
Spa again disappointing, large pool what was on the cool side, sauna room and steam room, no jacuzzi's
Drinks very expensive
Breakfast selection poor, premier inn do a much better breakfast for half the price
The area is nice right on the shores of lake Windermere, would return to the area but not to this hotel.
Disappointing Stay
We stayed at the Hotel one weekend last year and the only issue we had was the Evening Meal was cold and we had to complain.
Unfortunately when we recently stayed 13th April 2024 we had a few more issues:
A glass of wine for the welcome drink but had to pay 2.50 for a glass of Soda.
We were informed on arrival that the Sauna was out of order.
Evening Meal was cold. Had to complain.
Breakfast was self service, every item on the Breakfast was cold. Had to complain.
In general Hotel would benefit from some
Our experience with offpeak?luxury.
Macdonald Hotel, obviously suffering staff problems and finance for upkeep.Occaisional examples of staff uncaring also lack of humour. Food was nondescript, menu unchangeing, restaurant staff impolite. This is on top of our stay at the Swan at Hay, where most of the above were found, again lack of upkeep maybe helped. The Harbour at Sidmouth was way ahead in the league. Some system of grading would be needed before we book more. We are booked at Buxton and Harrogate, fingers well crossed. Henry Davis.
Passed its sell by date
Quality of premium room very poor and hotel generally run down and in need of refurbishment which is not reflected in the price.
