OK
My wife and I had never been to the Lake District so we booked a night away for her birthday. There were 21 hotels on the country breaks website and I was most impressed by the daffodil, the pictures and idyllic location justified the fact it was the most expensive option. I paid for a lake view room, I was called after booking to tell me the room was in fact not available and offered a downgrade. I declined and paid extra towards a better room, a junior suite. Sounded great but in fact was very average and had a view of the car park. I paid extra towards this despite my booking, it stated a complimentary room upgrade was included in my package. It was almost 400 for one night including the spa.
The spa was great and the sauna exceptional, it was quite busy however and not quite the romantic intimate experience I was expecting. The staff were great to be fair however being promoted to top every time I ordered a drink at the bar annoying especially after paying extra for my room and on top of the luxury scenic car park view room
The staff in the restaurant were excellent to be fair, some of the most professional I have had the pleasure of being waited on by. The food however not amazing. We were looking forward to this after the long travel, i did enjoy the chicken tagine but the lamb main was ok, I have made better myself. The potato was excellent. My wife got the duck breast starter which was good, but the seafood risotto was awful. No offence. It was fishy and not a prawn in sight! The cocktails were great. We declined a dessert. The meal was almost 150 which we got a 35pp contribution towards, which would basically cover a main course. That absolutely was not worth 150 and was a disappointing birthday meal for my wife
The location is lovely and we had a drive into Windermere to see more of the Lake District the day after to make a bit more of an occasion of the trip. Overall we were disappointed with the experience, I would stay again but not for the price we paid
Thanks
Chris

Yes , we would stay here again
Three days in September 2024
Firstly all the staff were outstandingly pleasant and could not do enough to help. They engaged with guests, were friendly but respectful and seemed to enjoy what they were doing.
My wife has Alzheimer s and also has some physical disabilities so we were initially delighted that the room provided had a wet room fully equipped for wheelchair users . My wife does not need a wheelchair
However we soon discovered that there are disadvantages. There was no shelf or stand anywhere on which to place toiletries. There was no mirror above the very small washbasin to allow me to shave. There was a large wall mounted mirror about three feet away. There are a multitude of grab rails but no towel rails. The grab rails were either placed vertically or very low so that towels could trail on the floor. These are meant to be constructive comments rather than complaints.I did not ,in view of our short stay and the the unlikely possibility of an available alternative, make any comment at the time of our visit.
The restaurant that we used was on the first floor with many tables having windows overlooking the grounds leading down to the lake - excellent .Breakfast was also excellent. The dinner menu remained unchanged from day to day whilst we were there and we both found it a bit limited. The waiting staff were,as mentioned, excellent.
We did not use the spa facilities.
The Hotel is very easy to find, being directly on the A591, the only north /south route through the lakes and therefore quite busy making leaving the car park less easy than we would like. However the hotel is on the lakeside with extensive grounds leading direct to the private lake shore and a large car park and also within easy walking distance of the centre of Grasmere village.
We paid almost 1000 for three nights bed , breakfast and dinner which we consider was not exceptional value.
Overall we consider the hotel is quite good at what they do and their staff lifts its ratings considerably .
Its position in the middle of the Northern lakes makes it attractive for many.

Lovely setting
One of the things about hotel rooms is that they never have labels on them to state that they are, indeed, the standard of room that one has booked. You are put in a room with nothing to compare it with; if the reception staff say it is a superior room, that's what it is. So my room, a "superior lake view room" which was, let's be honest, pretty damned expensive, must have been what I was told. Well, we could see the lake - just about - but much more of the rest of the hotel from the window. The room was nice enough, very stained carpet, very noisy air con, and the bed - massive - had such an uncomfortable mattress that sleeping comfortably was difficult. A hard ridge at hip level right across the bed, impossible to avoid. And of course a problem not easy to detect when accepting the room. We should have complained after the first night but for some strange reason failed to do so; the receptionist showed so little interest in the report at check out that I wondered whether others had complained too.
Off peak, and we understand that there will be issues. The hotel coped well enough, I don't think there were many residents mid January but the restaurant was capable and service was lightning fast and efficient. Not much choice for breakfast, "adequate" would describe that.
The weather was beautiful and the setting sublime so those boxes were ticked. If the Daffodil is aspiring to luxury status then in my opinion it misses; it's a good mid range offering, but set in fantastic scenery to command a premium.
Birthday treat
Been a few times to this hotel always had a good time their.the room we got needs a new bed base well worn ,but very clean wouldn't put me off booking again staff are lovely
