The hotel is in an excellent location for exploring the Lakes. We were hoping for a free room upgrade, as was part of the deal, and maybe we did get that, but our room was quite small at the back with a car park view and poor sound insulation from the other rooms, we were woken up every day by the sound of the neighbouring room rolling its blind! The hotel itself has a warming feel and staff made sure there was a fire going if you were in the lounge. It was a bit quiet off season, and we would have prefered a bit more atmosphere. It was disappointing that dispite being able to see that the bar had all sorts of drinks and cocktail ingredients, no cocktails would be served. I would stay again but in a room eith a view!

A gem amid Cumbrian splendour
An overnight stay with our dog before heading back to home and work.
Splendid house and grounds, although house (like so many) now looking a little jaded in parts.
Very welcoming and helpful staff and very dog-friendly. As expected, we couldn't eat in the restaurant but a table was set up in the residents lounge for all our meals and our waiter did everything he could to ensure we were comfortable and looked after. We had afternoon tea (delicious but, as always, too much sweet and not enough savoury), the excellent seven course taster menu for dinner and full english for breakfast.
A great stay and good value for the quality provided.

Beautiful hotel ....BUT
We had a lovely stay, first class afternoon tea beautiful hotel and excellent dinner. Our breakfast was also good but the young girls serving definitely need some training. The buffett was nearly empty when some guests came in {they were not late}. When a couple of guests asked if it would be replenished the answer was "well I suppose I could get you something if you really want". What they ordered then came only 2 minuets before their cooked order which was banged down on the table even though they had only just started eating their fruit. This did not happen to us but it was still upsetting to see such bad service in what otherwise is a very good hotel.

Here at the Merewood, we have high standards which we all try to adhere to and it seems that these standards must have been missed.

Good short break
Ignoring the weather (2 storms and visited in Jan.) we had a voucher for our 50th wedding anniversary
