Beautiful location & friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Restaurant generally very good but would have liked to see more variation in the menu offerings from day to day.
Great value for money
A very pleasant hotel with stunning views over Lake Windermere and surrounding hills from all public rooms and terrace . Staff were extremely polite and pleasant at all times . Meals were beautifully cooked and presented .Room was tastefully decorated ,one small niggle with a 6 feet tall husband the wall light on the sloping roof of bedroom was a bit of a hazard for night time bathroom visits . Light could maybe be situated behind the bed instead . Great location for getting about by public transport . Bus stops available on the main road and in Windermere bus station . After a day walking around though the uphill road back to the Hotel was a bit of a struggle . The clue is in the name I suppose HILLTHWAITE . With afterthought we could have taken the car to the bottom of the hill each morning . Problem solved .
Review of our short break
We enjoyed our 1 night break and we will return for a longer break in 2018. Every aspect of the stay was good and we had no complaints whatsoever.
A hidden gem, well nearly.
Hotel was spotlessly clean in public areas as well as bedrooms and bathrooms. A bit of a rabbit warren but perhaps that is part of the charm. It did not have a lift but we knew that in advance however that would probably prevent us from revisiting. Excellent views across the lake from all the public rooms and some of the bedrooms including ours. Food was very good if and when it arrived. We waited 30 minutes for our main courses after the first courses had been cleared away, some breakfast items just didn't appear at all. Waiting staff were quite attentive but did not appear to have very much experience of waiting on in a hotel of this quality.
Lovely well presented hotel
We stayed for a weekend to enjoy the surrounding area and this little gem made the weekend even better. The weather was awful but the hotel was warm and welcoming. The decor in public rooms are beautifully presented with a log burner in the main lounge which was lit on the Saturday evening . The restaurant staff were particularly welcoming, the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The bedroom was clean and warm having occasions room meant we had complimentary wine and water replaced each day, robes and slippers with a view across the lake. The swimming pool is small and was busy on the Saturday, there is a sauna and steam room again busy the changing room was quite wet so it made changing difficult other than that it was a good stay. It is at the top of a very steep hill which gives it the view. Might cause some problems for some people. Its close to Windermere about 20 25 mins walk down with all the facilities that Windermere has to offer. We would definitely stay here again.

A very enjoyable stay.
Very good hotel with frendly staff.
Relaxing break
2 nights well spent in an occasion room. Stunning newly refurbished bathroom had lots of luxurious extras.
We ate dinner both nights in the restaurant and the quality of food was excellent. Waiting staff were professional and polite. Pool is small but adequate, ideal for kids and sauna and steam room would be very welcome after a long walk in the rain.
fabulous restaurant
a lovely hotel set with limited views of the lake. not in easy walking distance of the town nor with lifts to upper floors. however the shinning star at Hillthwaite is their restaurant with truly professional service and exquisite meals. A suitable place for a few days of luxury.
