Romantic stay

Deborah, Cheshire, stayed: November 2021

We booked one of the more superior bedrooms which states for special occasions. However the bedroom was just ordinary with a nice view. Just a white quilt on the bed. This greatly disappointed us. Feel this is false advertising. The pool was dated but ok. Have to have time slots which made it very difficult. The staff and food could not be better.

Hillthwaite House says...

Thank you for the positive comments re the staff and food - we do appreciate it.
The room booked is one of our occasion rooms and we are sorry you were disappointed. We have removed all cushions and throws from the beds due to current covid conditions and listening to feedback we have continued with the time slots for the pool as it is only small.
We are on a rolling refurbishment programme and continue to invest and improve.

Minor niggles let the hotel down

GL, Perthshire, stayed: March 2023

Good points
Nice location between Bowness and Windermere with lovely views.
Staff were all very pleasant and helpful.
Room we had was lovely with comfy bed, very clean, well furnished and a bathroom to die for.
Having the small leisure facility was welcome but it is very small.
Niggles
The restaurant seeks to give the impression of being up market but served cold porridge and another guest said he had the same issue.
Reakfast in general was table service but i prefer a buffet where you can have more than one slice of toast each.
Evening meals were included in our deal but based on our experience we wouldn't have been happy to pay the prices being charged on the nenu. I had beef bourginon special on the first night but there was hardly any meat in my serving, it had little potato and hardly any vegetables. I asked the waitress if I could have some of the sour dough bread to help but she returned with a slice of white pan loaf, seemed very mean. Similarly I opted for one of the specials on another night and it came with only 5 small cubes of roast potato to accompany the lamb, again very mean.
The cost of drinks was extortionate at over 6.00 for a pint of lager.
Whilst the pool area was nice it was disappointing that the shower was out of commission as was the steam room.

In general we loved our stay but to be honest not sure I would go for half board.

Ideal for a romantic break

Michael, Lancashire, stayed: February 2025

We liked everything about the hotel, the only thing I would mention is the dinner menu didn t change, which didn t really affect us on a 2 night stay, but may be a problem for longer stays.

Friendly service in a beautiful location

Bob B, Shropshire, stayed: July 2018

A comfortable hotel located between Bowness and Windermere with friendly helpful staff. The public rooms are tastefully decorated and during our 6 night stay, we never had any difficulty in finding somewhere to sit. The staff are very customer focused and pleasant. our initial room allocated was too small and lacking in storage space for a week long stay, but the reception staff soon allocated us an alternate room. Should we consider staying again, we would consider upgrading to a Premier room.
